Making the decision to move to a new town can be daunting. There is so much to take into consideration – the schools, the community, access to healthcare and so much more. If you are considering a move to Livingston, you are in luck because this town has great attributes and amenities in spades!

The median home value in Livingston is $582,800 and Livingston’s median house-old income is $145,916. The community offers a great variety of homes and townhome and rental communities.

Livingston is home to nearly 30,000 residents. It occupies 14 square miles in western Essex County and is conveniently located just 25 miles from New York City, with Interstates 80 and 280, the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Route 24 all located nearby. Mass transit options to New York from town, each taking roughly an hour, include a town-sponsored jitney service from the Livingston Mall to the New Jersey Transit rail station in South Orange; driving to Harrison and taking the PATH to lower Manhattan; the Community Coach USA Route 77 bus from Livingston Center to Port Authority; or taking Our Bus, from the mall, with stops throughout NYC.

The school system is known for its award-winning arts, music and sports programs. These programs are important factors for most people who are in the process of making the decision to move into town. Livingston offers nine public schools: six elementary schools for grades K-5, two middle schools – one with a central 6, and Livingston High School, as well as an alternative school at Monmouth Court.

Livingston’s schools continually rank among the best schools in the state and nation – with Livingston High School consistently listed among the top 5% of schools in the nation. In addition, Livingston High School has been named a Blue-Ribbon and Reward School. Also, based on data released by the New Jersey Department of Education, the Livingston High School Class of 2017 was listed among the top 50 schools for the highest average SAT scores in New Jersey public high schools. It is also important to note that many of Livingston’s students go on to attend leading universities and to succeed in the arts, sciences and political fields.

Aside from Livingston High School, there are three private schools – Newark Academy, Aquinas Academy and Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, and three special needs schools: Academy360 Upper School,  Horizons School and Sinai. Residents are supportive of the special needs community, in the classroom and through programs like The Friendship Circle and Life Town.

Livingston residents are active. Many can be seen riding bikes, running, walking, and/or playing sports at the sprawling green Memorial Oval, which is conveniently located right in front of the high school. They also enjoy the more than 470 acres of beautiful wooded parks, hiking trails and open space in Livingston. Livingston also boasts pickleball courts, bocce, shuffleboard and well-maintained tennis courts and sport fields. There are also 11 playgrounds – one of which is adaptive. Livingston also has a dog park, an art park and two community pools.

Residents are very giving and charitable in Livingston. There are more than 100 active volunteer groups in this suburb, such as: Healthy Community, Healthy Youth (HCHY), which support most of the town’s events including summer camp and an Adult School; Livingston Youth and Community Services (LYCS); the Children’s Theatre of Livingston; Livingston Community Players; Livingston Symphony Orchestra (LSO); and the Arts Council Livingston.

There is a powerful sense of community in town. Livingston offers numerous well-attended annual events including the September Welcome to Livingston Picnic and December Camuso Display. There’s also a series of events in May for Livingston’s Youth Appreciation Week including a Town-Wide Campout and Movie Under the Stars; and a Family Festival Day. Also in May, Livingston hosts the Kiwanis Karnival and Memorial Day Parade. In June, Livingston holds a Livingston Summerfest International Food Truck Extravaganza and on July 4th, Livingston hosts all-day/night activities at the Memorial Oval including a Classic Car Show, Kiwanis Swim Carnival, bouncy houses, rides, games, pony rides, an ice cream eating contest, Powerhouse Studios Wacky Sports, Pickleball, Cricket and a Bands, Beer, & Wine Café, as well as a stunning fireworks show. In July, residents enjoy an Outdoor Concert Series, and during August, residents participate in a National Night Out at the Oval.

Residents also have access to world-class healthcare at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, which is home to over 1800 physician in over 100 medical and surgical specialty and subspecialty services, and via Summit Medical , which supports over 30 specialties and services.

The town also offers many Italian restaurants and pizza parlors, Chinese, Greek and Mediterranean restaurants, steakhouses, delis, and more including the Ritz Diner, Nero’s, Cocco Bello Cafe, THAVNA, Sweet Basil Cafe, Eppes Essen and Nana’s Deli, Tropical Smoothie Café, Shake Shack, Assado Portuguese Steakhouse and Mezza.

Livingston’s charming main street feel with quaint cafes, restaurants and boutiques, the Livingston Mall, with over 100 stores, and three newly developed malls, at the corner of Eisenhower Parkway, offering the Container Store, a drive-thru Starbucks, Nordstrom Rack, Blaze Pizza, Cost Plus World Market, Ulta Beauty and Cycle Bar, are just indications of all there is to do in Livingston. In addition, long-standing businesses include favorites like: Karig’s Hardware, Sams, stylish Chari Amster, Jay's Shoe Box, Complements Two, 580 South, Bottle King, Meyers Dolls Toys Hobbies, PETSector and more. For grocery shopping, Shoprite and Kings fit the bill and green grocers Trader Joes and Whole Foods are located nearby.

The renowned Turtle Back Zoo, Codey Arena, Mini-GOLF Safari, TreeTop Adventure Course, McLoone’s Boathouse, Paddle Boat Launch, Children’s Regatta Playground and a picturesque 1.7-mile walkway are also located there, with the SOPAC, Thomas Edison Museum, Paper Mill Playhouse, the Short Hills Mall nearby.
